Welcome one and all to my review of the 2013 horror film, Banshee Chapter. Before I begin you should check out my review of The First Purge or Phoenix Forgotten and if that doesn't give you any inspiration for your viewing this Halloween check out my article that offers inspiration even to the most casual of horror fans HERE.
As always if you have any comments about this or any other post I have written leave a comment below or by following me on Twitter and Instagram.
As I have stated I am talking about Banshee Chapter in this post and what a film this is. Released in 2013, Banshee Chapter was produced by Zachary Quinto and follows the story of investigative journalist Anne (Katia Winter) as she tries to solve the mystery of her friends disappearance as he was researching the MK Ultra experiments that occured in the 1970's. This leads her to meet writer Thomas Blackburn (Ted Levine) and on the trail of something much darker. Banshee Chapter is available on DVD, Blu Ray and Amazon Prime Video.
Banshee Chapter is a mixture of narrative story telling and found footage that sets this film apart from a lot of similar films. Like another film I recently reviewed, Phoenix Forgotten, Banshee Chapter uses news reel footage and footage from experiments throughout to aide the story as it unfolds. Usually these types of films rely on hand held self shot style footage to create the impression that it is found footage however, Banshee Chapter bucks this trend by shooting the film in a documentary style.
Banshee Chapter is loosely based on a 1970's adaptation of a HP Lovecraft entitled From Beyond, and it feels very science fiction based. a lot of the horror comes from fear and the unknown rather than heavy gore that these types of films can over use. There is a slight over use of the jump scare that has become part and parcel of the horror genre in recent years however, Banshee Chapter is a well written story with a satisfying, if not a little bit of an open ended finale.
My only issue with Banshee Chapter is that the acting throughout veers very closely to the over the top, pantomime at times. Whilst I appreciate that horror can be like this a lot there are some scenes that make me cringe a little bit.
Overall Banshee Chapter is a widely over looked horror film that dishes out the scares whilst also telling an entertaining story.
