Welcome one and all to my review of the 2014 film "Hungerford". As always if you have anything to add leave a comment in the section below or by following me on "Twitter" or "Instagram".
I, like a lot of people, find myself scrolling through endless films on "Netflix" looking for something new to watch. I love the sheer volume of horror films on offer. "Hungerford" caught my eye and I really wasn't disappointed.
Written, directed and starring Drew Casson, "Hungerford" was initially released in 2014 by "Wildbunch". The story of "Hungerford" follows Cohen and his friends as their town descends into anarchy after an explosion at an abandoned factory on the outskirts of town. As residents begin to act erratically it becomes clear that something is definitely wrong.
As I mentioned before I was pleasantly surprised by "Hungerford". Sure it's shot in the found footage style, a genre that has been overdone but, it works well shot in this manner. The fact that this film was made by a 19 year old with a very modest budget is admirable. The visual effects are few and far between but, when used are done really well. The initial explosion and the final scenes of the film are slick and well done showing a flair only present in bigger budget films. The creature work is done well but, is not over used as it may have been in bigger budget films. The final scenes inside the factory are done well, showing a little view of the threat without fully spoiling the mystique behind the invasion.
The plot and pacing of "Hungeford" is short and sharp, running at a mere 79 minutes. This means that the audience are not bogged down in character work or exposition. Wit this pacing the audience are dropped into the middle of the action within minutes of the start of the film. The dialogue is a little on the nose at times but, not so much that it is distracting.
"Hungerford" is a different take on the outbreak, zombie themed movie. Instead of a biological attack or genetic experimentation the film blends science fiction and alien invasion with the zombie horror genre in a satisfying way, like "28 Days Later" mixed with "Extraterrestrial".
Overall "Hungerford" is a great addition to the British horror genre. Fast paced and unsettling it is a great film to catch on "Netflix".
