Welcome one and all. With Halloween and the dark nights fast approaching the prospect of nights in front of the television are more and more likely. There is a huge amount of ways you can watch some of the best classic and modern horror films, whether it's on DVD or Blu Ray or one of the numerous streamings services, that will offer something for even the casual watcher. I'm here to make a few suggestions for you to mull over. As always I love feedback so leave a comment below or by following me on Twitter or Instagram.
1. Halloween (1978)
A very obvious choice but, with the new addition to the story coming out this year the original is well worth a watch. To be honest most of the original series are worth checking out this Halloween, maybe watch the final 3 and Rob Zombie remakes if you are really dedicated but, it is the original entry that is the best. Jamie Lee Curtis began her film career in Haddonfield and it's little wonder that her career flourished. This is a great film to show someone that is maybe just beginning to watch horror cinema and a real must see film. John Carpenter proves that he is the master of suspense, using the iconic music score to great effect. Michael Myers is relentless in his mission of killing anything in his way and Donald Pleasence has a great turn as Doctor Loomis. Unfortunately the quality of films goes down hill the further the franchise goes but, Halloween 3 is well worth a watch as it marks the only film in the franchise that does not feature Myers.

2. Tales Of Halloween (2015)
I am a sucker for an anthology film and Tales Of Halloween is one of the better creepy compendiums. Very similar in style to Trick R Treat, Tales Of Halloween features interlinked stories directed by such horror stalwarts as Darren Lynn Bousman, Neil Marshall and Lucky Mckee. The tales take place in a typical suburban American town and features a candy hunting demon, devil possessed child, ghosts, aliens and even some warring neighbours. All of the tales have a dark humour that really balances out the gore. Look out for horror veterans Lin Shaye Barry Bostwick, Mick Garris and even John Landis popping out in this fun scare fest.

3. The Cured (2017)
What if there was a viral outbreak that caused people to turn into zombies that could be cured; the only side effect is the cured can remember everything they did as a zombie. That is the premise behind the 2017 Irish film starring Ellen Page. Europe has been engulfed in a zombie crisis and the story follows the cured being re introduced into the general public where they are treated like second class citizens. This film is more than just a zombie genre film, the social message is put out on front street. This is another film I feel fell under the radar and should have gained a lot more attention. There are some great dramatic performances throughout.

4. Suspria (1977)
Just like Halloween, Suspiria is getting the remake treatment soon and what better way to celebrate than to watch the original. Dario Argento produces an stylish horror film with a pounding and atmospheric soundtrack that will leave you baffled and terrified in equal measure. American ballet student Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) travels to a school in Germany to perfect her craft, only to encounter a number of murders perpetrated by her teachers, who just so happen to be witches. This would be ideal watching alongside the equally great Argento film, Inferno, and really is a horror masterpiece.

5. Hereditary (2018)
The film that everyone was talking about at the start of the year was the bizarre and unsettling, Hereditary. This was, in my opinion one of the most refreshing horror films in a few years that wore its influences on its sleeve. mashing classic films such as The Exorcist and Don't Look Now with Asian horror such as A Tale Of Two Sisters and The Grudge, Hereditary is baffling as it is suspenseful with some twists and turns even the most cynical movie goer would struggle to guess. Hereditary is receiving a DVD and Blu Ray release just in time for Halloween, the 8th of October, I urge you to go and check it out.

Honourable Mentions: It's not all scary films this year, television has its share of scares. The Purge television series is a fantastic watch, think of it as an in depth look at the lives of people from every walk of life on the one night a year where all crime is legal. American Horror Story is back with Apocalypse but, all of the series are well worth a watch.
