Emelie (2015)

Welcome one and all to my review for 2015 horror/thriller "Emelie". Before I begin I would like to encourage you to check out the numerous articles I've written over the past few years by looking through the archive on the homepage. And as always if you have any comments or want to add anything leave a comment in the section below or by following me on Twitter or Instagram.

If you're anything like me on your days off there is nothing better than kicking back and watching a film that you may have never seen before. I'm a sucker for a horror film and whilst flicking through "Netflix" I stumbled across "Emilie". I'd never even heard of the film, released through "Dark Sky Films" in 2015 but, I thought I would give it a chance.

"Emelie" follows the story of a mysterious babysitter called Anna who comes to look after 3 children as their parents go out for dinner to celebrate their wedding anniversary. As the night progresses all is not right with the babysitter as she subjects the children to some less than stellar babysitting practises. All the while a mysterious acquaintance of Anna is watching the children's parents.

I can't recommend "Emelie" enough. Horror fans looking for gore and blood will be disappointed but, the lack of gore is replaced with some great story telling and tension building. From the minute Anna walks on screen you know something isn't right. Anna (Sarah Bolger) has a subtle intensity about her where she can switch from charming to sociopath in the same scene. She is genuinely menacing at some points of the film without really raising her voice. The children, in particular Jacob (Joshua Rush) are incredible throughout, acting with real vulnerability.

I will say that the story is told in such a sparse way that it makes the character of Anna that bit more terrifying however,  felt that the twist in her character half way through the film was a little misjudged, you will see what I mean when you watch the film. I would also say that there are a couple of scenes that are a little bit difficult to watch but, the rest of the film more than makes up for it. The third act, like a lot of modern horrors, falls a little short. the story charges away at a break neck speed so much so by the time the end comes it ends in such a way that made me feel that it could have been a lot more satisfying.

Overall "Emelie" is a great horror/thriller that is a fantastic piece of suspenseful cinema. The 3rd act falls a little short but, doesn't ruin the rest of the film and is well worth your attention.
