5 Films You Should Be Watching This Halloween

Welcome one and all to my list of 5 films you should be watching this Halloween. As always I encourage feedback and comments which you can do by leaving a comment below or by following me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram

If you follow my blog you'll know that I am a huge horror movie fan and through the entire month of October I indulge my love of all things horror. In this article I will talk about some obvious choices and some films that a lot of you might not know about. Before I begin I would say I won't be talking about films I've previously written about such as "The Void", "The Autopsy Of Jane Doe" or "The Transfiguration" but, I would encourage you to go and read my reviews of these great films.

1. Halloween (1978)

I know right ? obvious choice. Besides the obvious reason for picking this classic I feel that this film is a must see film for anyone looking for a great horror film. This film not only launched an often over looked franchise but, launched the career of Jamie Lee Curtis. Made for a modest budget, this film proves that you don't need elaborate set pieces and effects to make a horror film that will live on through the years. After this there are some high points in the franchise (2 and the often criticised 3) and some low points (5 and Resurrection) but, I would highly recommend you stick to the original series rather than the Rob Zombie remakes that are just nasty and dark with the purpose simply to gross out the audience.

2. V/H/S (2012)

I have mentioned the "V/H/S" series in previous blogs as well as the concept of the "Horror anthology" in previous reviews of great examples such as "XX" but, "V/H/S" is one of the best examples of the anthology concept. Released in 2012 this film features films by such talent as Adam Wingard, Ti West and "Radio Silence" and is broken down into 5 sections and a film that links the sections together. What you get through the film is a mix of fantasy, found footage, slasher and more that provides something for every horror fan. "V/H/S" spawned 2 sequels and a spin off entitled "Siren" which is spun off from "Amateur Night" that features in "V/H/S". Well worth checking out not only the original but, the decent sequels too.

3. A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

I know, another very obvious choice but, it wouldn't be "Halloween" or a list of great horror films without an appearance of the legendary Wes Craven. "A Nightmare On Elm Street" is not only one of my favourite horror films but, one of my favourite films in general.  This film spawned a number of sequels and a remake (not worth watching) that brought Freddy Krueger into the public eye for well over a decade. Craven provides not only some truly terrifying scenes but, a great story that is loosely based on stories that Craven read and also nightmares of his own. Sure there are some great sequels in the series but, as always, the original is always the best.

4. Hush (2016)

"Hush" is a great example of high quality horror films available on "Netflix" and I've reviewed another by "Hush" creator Mike Flanagan that was released in 2016 entitled "Before I Wake" What I love about "Hush" is that it eliminates some of the traits and tropes that are prominent in modern horror such as the use of jump scares and droning soundtracks driving the audience reaction. The reason these are not a factor is that the films protagonist, Maddie, is deaf and instead of jump scares the audience experiences what she experiences which is the fear of a silent attacker. Fast paced and edge of your seat viewing.

5. Get Out (2017)

"Get Out" has to be mentioned on this list just because it is one of the best films of 2017 so far. Sure it's not really a conventional horror film but, more of a horror film based around the sheer horror in society currently. The first half of the film is a black comedic look at the modern age the political and social landscape that exists. From there a break neck, nail biting series of events unfolds that will leave you guessing right until the end. The performances are phenomenal throughout and the story itself is so well written that you won't really know how it's going to turn out until the end.
