As most of you know I have been looking forward to The Cabin In The Woods for a very long time. This desire has not been helped with the fact that every time I switch on the TV or go on Facebook there is promotion spots for the film. This film has had me interested ever since I heard the premise, which seems like a very long time. This film nearly never saw a release when MGM went broke. Luckily Lionsgate picked up the pieces and eventually released what was made in 2009.I have been excited all week at the trip to the cinema today and for once I really didn't care about trailers apart from the trailer for Silent House (WOW it looks crazy). The film is equal parts terror and black comedy. There are some moments where I couldn't help but laugh a lot and most of the comic relief is provided by Richard Jenkins (Step Brothers) and Bradley Whitford (Billy Madison). Whilst most of the throw away cinema attendants that went to a showing Of The Cabin In The Woods will expect another teen horror movie where there is the stereotypical sex, drugs and drinking references that are the main reason for the horror that befalls them they will be wrong until the end of the first act. From the beginning of the second act the film gets crazy and fast. Everything people expect from this film is turned on its head and the screen is then filled with what I can only describe as a head scratcher. On my way out of the cinema I described the film as playing blinds man buff on the edge of the universe. You know something bad is going to happen, you just don't know when, why or what ? The casting of the teens in the movie was brilliant. A pre Thor Chris Hemsworth is an intelligent jock, a rarity in the horror genre. Kristen Connelly plays the tortured female lead perfectly, however I wished they had touched on the story between her and the university lecturer closer. Honourable mentions also go to Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz and Jesse Williams for their roles of the other friends. Whilst I am not going to spoil the film for anyone I would advise that the 3rd act is one of the most crazy, baffling moments in cinema this year that is clearly something that proves that Drew Goddard (LOST, Cloverfield) and Joss Wheadon (Buffy, Firefly, Avengers Assemble) has a strange mind, also watch out for a cameo from a Sci-fi icon. Overall this has been one of the better films I have watched in a long time. This film takes everything you expect from the average horror/thriller movie and spins it around to Zero G. Check out the trailer below and please go check it out:
