Welcome one and all to my preview and prediction blog for this Sundays Smackdown Live exclusive live special; Backlash. This one has a really strange build for the so called "Land Of Opportunity" especially since the "Superstar Shake Up". Unlike RAW, Smackdown Live are able to utilise their marquee champion so there's no real gimmick matches on the card. As always if you have any comments or thoughts leave a comment below or tell me on social media.
1. Pre show match: Aiden English Vs. Tye Dillinger: This was made on the most recent episode of Smackdown Live and seems a little thrown together. Aiden English is due a bit of a career resurgence now that he is a singles competitor again. He has great ability and the potential to be a great character he simply needs the right gimmick and a chance to show how good he can be. Tye Dillinger has had a great start to the year from his feud with SaNity to his mystery entrance in the Royal Rumble and now coming to the Smackdown Live roster. This is a potential feud starter between these two criminally under rated superstars. I think this will be a great match with Dillinger coming out on top.
2. Erick Rowan Vs. Luke Harper: These two former Wyatt Family siblings have the potential to make this match an opportunity maker. both have had little in the way of character development or storyline since the breakdown of the Wyatt Family. Both Rowan and Harper are both great workers and have both had glimmers of character building with Harper being bitter toward Bray Wyatt and his "brainwashing" and Rowan feeling like Harper betrayed the family all the while being seriously creepy. I think this will be a hard hitting affair and as much as I would like to see Harper get a much needed win I think Rowan may win with some help with super natural help.
3. Sami Zayn Vs. Baron Corbin: This is another match that has the potential to do great things for both men. Corbin has been on the cusp of a main event spot for a few months now and I feel if he and Zayn continue to have good showings against each other they may both end up in the main event. Contrasting styles make for a great back and forth match. Expect the usual little guy flying about and big guy destroying little guy spots. I think Corbin may get the win on this occasion and lead him to the main event against the winner of Orton and Mahal.
4. Charlotte Flair, Naomi and Becky Lynch Vs. Natalya, Carmella and Tamina: To say I'm disappointed by this match is an understatement. I get what is happening and what is trying to be achieved. There is a team of strong heels that pointed out the other team can't get along but, I would have much rather seen a title match between the under rated Naomi and Natalya or even a triple threat match with Charlotte also taking part. What the audience have got instead is a throw away 6 person tag match that will be nothing more than the filler matches of old. I'm not really bothered who wins this one as I feel it under values all involved.
5. Smackdown Tag Team Championships: The Usos (C) Vs. Breezango: I would have never in a million years predicted that this match would have taken place for the Smackdown Live tag team championships but, the "Land Of Opportunity" strikes again. Breezango have been more entertaining than either of the respective singles characters have ever been. The Usos on the other hand have been under used and almost forgotten about as the champions. If I have one complaint about Smackdown Live is that the tag division has been really badly written and booked. I would love to see Breezango have a little run as champions but, I doubt they will and the Usos will continue to fly under the radar as champions.
6. Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Dolph Ziggler: I am actually quite excited about this match. Dolph Ziggler has been a great heel for most of his career and should be booked as the angry, bitter veteran now rather than the dull happy guy that was passable. Nakamura has had a great build to his first Smackdown Live match. the fact that he didn't have a throw away match upon his entrance to the "main roster" has been well booked. I think this match will surprise a lot of people and be one of the best matches of the weekend and see Nakamura come out on top before being attacked by the now full fledged Dirty Heel Ziggler.
7. WWE United States Championship: Kevin Owens (C) Vs. AJ Styles: This match is probably going to be the highlight of the whole event. The "New Face Of America" has become one of the most entertaining things on WWE television overall. Now that he is on Smackdown Live I feel he will probably become the top star of the brand and it is only a matter of time before he become WWE champion. That being said I would like to see him promote the US Championship as Cena did before. AJ Styles is another top star and should be in the main event all the time as his mixture of ability and character has been highly entertaining. When you bring these two together what you have is a match where either could be the heel but only Styles could be a convincing good guy. This match will be a prospective match of the year. I think Owens will come out on top but, only because I want to see more of the "New Face Of America" with the US Championship.
8. WWE Championship: Randy Orton (C) Vs. Jinder Mahal: I am nothing short of perplexed at this match. I have just disliked Randy Ortons most recent run as champion, and not because of his controversial social media activity, simply because he has been dull. Jinder Mahal is now getting the chance I feel he perhaps should have been given a few years ago when he was nearly the first NXT champion. I do think he may have been pushed a little too fast, perhaps being given a US championship match first would have been better but, I am intrigued to see what happens during this match and highly doubt that Mahal will win the Championship on his first title match ever but, stranger things have happened.
